Knowing Who You Are

“Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God.” – Romans 1:1

From the very first sentence of Romans, Paul makes his identity unmistakably clear. He knew exactly who he was in Christ and what his purpose was. Before addressing the sin, confusion, and compromise within the Roman church, Paul first anchored himself—and his readers—in his calling. He encouraged them, affirmed them, and gently won their hearts before confronting the difficult truths they needed to hear.

Paul deeply loved the church. He longed to strengthen their faith and be strengthened by them as well (Romans 1:11–12). But love also required honesty. To exhort them faithfully, Paul needed a firm foundation in his own walk with Christ. He knew he was a servant of Jesus, called to preach the gospel, and set apart for God’s purposes. That clarity gave him boldness. It gave him confidence. It made his ministry effective because he never questioned Who called him or what he was called to do.

Paul’s certainty in Christ shaped everything about his life. He didn’t waver in his identity, his mission, or his devotion. He knew where he stood, and he lived from that conviction. That same clarity is what empowers believers today. When we know who we are in Christ, we can serve boldly, speak truthfully, and walk confidently in the calling God has placed on our lives.

What about you today? Do you know who you are in Christ? Do you know where you stand with Him? Do you understand your gifts, your calling, and the purpose He has placed on your life? If so, are you using them to build His church? Boldness in ministry begins with clarity in identity. Ask Jesus to reveal these things to you as you seek Him in prayer and in His Word. He will speak—just as He did to Paul.
