Before this moment, Mary Magdalene had watched Jesus die, saw His body placed in a sealed tomb, and returned early Sunday morning only to find it empty. Peter and John came, looked, and left—but Mary stayed. Her heart was shattered, her hope buried, and her understanding clouded by grief. She stood outside the tomb weeping, unaware that resurrection life was already standing behind her.
Mary’s sorrow kept her from recognizing what was right in front of her. She saw angels, she heard voices, but she still assumed the worst—someone must have taken His body. She turned around because she sensed movement, but even then she didn’t realize it was Jesus. Darkness, tears, and confusion blurred her vision. Only one thing broke through: His voice. When Jesus said her name, everything changed. In an instant, sorrow turned to joy, confusion turned to clarity, and despair turned to hope. She recognized Him—not by sight, but by sound.
We often find ourselves in Mary’s place. Circumstances darken our vision. Sin clouds our perspective. Fear, grief, or frustration make it hard to see Jesus even when He is near. We search for comfort in places where He is not present and end up feeling empty, alone, or overwhelmed. Yet Jesus is risen. He draws near. He calls us by name. The question is whether we will turn toward Him when He speaks.
Jesus is calling your name today. He is not distant, and He is not silent. If you listen, you will hear Him—through His Word, through His Spirit, through His gentle nudges in your heart. Like Mary, one moment of recognition can change everything. Turn to Jesus and let His voice bring you the peace your heart has been longing for.
