When God Says ‘Don’t Go’

“She pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot…” – Numbers 22:25

Balaam is one of the most unusual figures in Scripture—a pagan diviner who somehow knew enough about the true God to hear His voice. He was famous throughout the land, so much so that Balak, king of Moab, tried to hire him to curse Israel. But God had already spoken clearly: Do not go. Do not curse them. They are blessed. Still, Balaam’s heart was pulled by greed and ambition. He saddled his donkey and headed down a road God told him not to take. What followed is one of the most striking scenes in the Old Testament: a donkey seeing what the prophet could not, an angel blocking the path, and a crushed foot meant to stop a man rushing toward destruction.

Balaam had been given incredible spiritual privilege. God used him to speak some of the most beautiful words in Scripture—prophecies of justice, mercy, and even the coming Messiah: “There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Scepter shall rise out of Israel.” Yet despite these moments of divine inspiration, Balaam’s old nature eventually resurfaced. His lust for reward and recognition overtook him, and he led Israel into sin. What began as a small compromise in his heart grew into a trap that ensnared an entire nation. The crushed foot should have been his wake‑up call—a painful reminder that God had already said, Don’t go. But Balaam ignored the warning, and it cost him everything.

God often places “donkeys” in our path—moments that stop us, frustrate us, or even wound us—not to harm us, but to save us. A closed door. A strained relationship. A sudden conviction in the conscience. These are not accidents; they are merciful roadblocks. When something presses against us, when life “crushes our foot,” it may be God shouting, Turn around before this destroys you. Balaam missed his moment of mercy. We don’t have to.

Is God trying to get your attention today? Is there a direction you’re heading that He has already warned you about? Has He allowed something to slow you down, frustrate your plans, or make you pause? Don’t ignore the warning. Listen to His voice. He may be keeping you from a path that leads to ruin. Turn back while the roadblock is still a blessing.
