God’s Delight in Faithful Workers

“Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, who have labored in the Lord. Greet the beloved Persis, who labored much in the Lord.” – Romans 16:12

Paul writes, “Greet Tryphaena and Tryphosa, who labor in the Lord” (Romans 16:12, NKJV). Their names mean “delicate” and “dainty,” but their work was anything but soft. Paul uses the word kopiáō—to labor to the point of exhaustion. These women may have had gentle names, but they carried strong hearts. They poured themselves out for Christ, serving until they were spent. Scripture doesn’t record their titles, positions, or accomplishments—only that they labored in the Lord. And in God’s eyes, that is enough.

Then Paul mentions “the beloved Persis, who labored much in the Lord.” Her name means “Persian woman,” suggesting she was from far outside the Jewish world. She was likely older, having served faithfully for many years. Paul doesn’t compare her to Tryphaena and Tryphosa—he simply says she labored much. That small phrase is a crown of honor for every believer who has served long, quietly, and faithfully. God sees. God remembers. And Paul, with pastoral wisdom, calls her “the beloved Persis,” not “my beloved,” showing affection without impropriety. Her life reminds us that the kingdom of God is built not by the famous, but by the faithful.

These three women—delicate in name, strong in service—show us what grace looks like when it takes root in ordinary lives. They weren’t apostles, preachers, or miracle‑workers. They were laborers. Tireless servants. Women whose hands were worn but whose hearts were full. Their stories echo the words of Jesus: “Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant” (Mark 10:43, NKJV). In God’s kingdom, greatness is measured not by applause but by endurance.

Serve Christ with whatever strength you have today. You may feel unnoticed or ordinary, but God honors every act done in His name. Whether your season is one of fresh energy or long‑tested endurance, your labor is not in vain. Let Tryphaena, Tryphosa, and Persis remind you that God delights in faithful workers—and He never forgets their work of love.

“In the kingdom of God, true greatness is found in lowly service, and the highest honor belongs to the humblest worker.”—Andrew Murray
